WELCOME TO
JIM TONER PERCUSSION
With one foot planted firmly in the world of classical/orchestral music, the other planted in the world of contemporary popular music, and his other limbs flailing through all other genres and styles in between; drummer/percussionist Jim Toner has amassed a diverse skill set spanning many genres and eras.
Jim holds a Master of Music in Literature and Performance degree from Western University Canada, where he also received his undergraduate degree in music performance. At Western he studied primarily under Dr. Jill Ball, Dr. Colleen Richardson and Maestro James Mckay. Jim then made the move to Toronto, Ontario to attend Humber College, studying primarily under Barry Romberg, Paul DeLong and Mark Kelso.
Working as a freelance percussionist has taken Jim from his small town beginnings in rural Niagara, to stages, theatres and concert halls all over the world. The majority of Jim’s work abroad has been occupying the drum chair of the show orchestras for a number of cruise ship companies including Royal Caribbean and Cunard, which allowed him the opportunity to visit 5 continents and play in front of thousands of people. Jim first caught the travel bug when in 2014 he was asked to join the Dragonfly Orchestra, a joint project between Culture Path Ltd. (Calgary) and Joytitan (Beijing). "Dragonfly Cafe" was a multimedia extravaganza and the first production the Liuzhou, China based group was able to take on the road, and Jim was asked to join them for their 3 month national Chinese tour.
Back home, Jim performs as a sideman for a number of solo performers spanning a spectrum of styles as drummer and percussionist. Most notably backing Toronto artists Stacey Kay and Tafari Anthony, as well as frequently appearing with the HITMEN DRUMLINE who were privileged to perform as one of the house acts during the Toronto Raptors 2019 NBA Championship Series. He has also performed as section percussionist with regional orchestras including the Stratford Symphony Orchestra, the International Symphony Orchestra and has appeared with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra.
Notably, Jim was a member of the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra (led by Colin Clarke) for their premiere in the Stern Auditorium of Carnegie Hall in New York City. He was also section leader for the Western University Wind Ensemble during multiple recording sessions culminating in the ensemble's very first album Apparitions, and has played for a number of musical theatre organizations in Southern Ontario.

Jim has harnessed this array of experience for educational purposes, offering private lessons (in-person and online), as well as clinics in school settings, with the hopes that he can share with others the experiences and knowledge that has enriched his life and has taken him to places he never dreamed he would go.
